NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

Georg Meyer-Wiel's paintings are usually the result of complex material processes.
Using a mix of acrylic paints, metals and various natural materials, they are a direct physical and emotional response to the world that surrounds him.

‘This series of paintings is inspired by isolation in times of Covid 19, Brexit and the attempt to establish a ‘new normal’ in the way we connect with others.
The phrase 'no man is an island' (after the 1624 prose work by English poet John Donne) expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive.
The paintings of Archipelagos invite to reflect on the connections that we have to others even when in isolation.
The actual islands on the paintings are created from pieces scraped off my studio floor during the first UK Lockdown in 2020, they are layers of paint that I have used over the past decade. I chose to use this material to create a reference to the archaeology of actual islands whilst they are pieces of my own archaeology, my island.’  Georg Meyer-Wiel
