In this series of paintings, the complexity of evolving natural forms investigates the unfolding of nature, despite of human interference.
They can be seen as an evolution of new anatomy, the shaping of time, generations and spirits to come.A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that serves as an emblem of a group of people, such as a family, clan, lineage, or tribe.Each painting in this series represents a spirit, a figure with bilateral symmetry.
The paintings can be combined with each other to create vertical columns.
This concept refers to the totem poles of the North American Indians where figures are placed on top of each other to symbolize or commemorate ancestors, cultural beliefs that recount familiar legends, clan lineages, or notable events.

‘Much of my work is concerned with observations on how humanity might develop towards the end of the Anthropocene and what impact our transient appearance has on the natural world.
A core long-term research subject in my work is extinction, but also an examination of evolution beyond the Anthropocene.
Evolution is an ongoing process and where one world comes to an end, another one unfolds.
The conservationist in me struggles to stay motivated considering the large-scale destruction of our ecosystems, but I find comfort in the thought that nature eventually reclaims any environment and one distant day even remainders of our civilization will be overgrown and possibly teaming with new life forms we can’t envision yet.’ Georg Meyer-Wiel
